The following was sent to the Director-General and the medical director of the Hospital of Catania, Garibaldi, as well as the medical director of the hospital of Nesima. There also seemed right back here on the blog.
Subject: note on the staff dell'UTIN - PO Nesima
write this letter, albeit with improper delay, not only because it seems only right but because we consider it a duty towards those who allowed us to tighten our baby in her arms.
When our son Richard was born was not a happy event. The sister with whom he shared the first months of pregnancy had been dead for a few days, and he was forced to come to play everything for everyone. I do not think it matters, here, retrace all the vicissitudes of his five-month hospitalization at the NICU of Nesima: respiratory crisis, bradycardia, cerebral haemorrhage, treatment nitric oxide, surgery on the duct Botallo, seizures, retinopathy, infections and it is all in the medical records, and should remain there. But there's one consideration that, as parents, we need to do: if our son had not been followed in that building, those people and with those tools, not going to make it. And now in the family chapel there were two plaques instead of one, to remember his passage through this world.
Instead, it was different. Richard has just turned a year, and well. Of course, he must retrieve a large gap with its peers, will have to overcome his deafness by cochlear implant that will be applied by October, will continue along with physical therapy before he could coordinate his movements well. And in fact some reservations about his future, despite the many positive impressions of the specialists who follow him, have not yet been dissolved. But we feel clearly that the path embarked is the right one, and that time will return to what has taken so far. Without the team
dell'UTIN this would not be reality. Not only for what they did, but especially for the way they did. The great humanity, care and affection shown to be that little bundle of 750 grams, which to us have allowed our family to overcome the moments of deepest crisis, those moments in which to listen only to the professionalism you should just pull the plug. But who has to do with their lives, especially with the fragile babies like Riccardo, must have human qualities that go far beyond the profession altogether. Quality dell'UTIN that all staff, from director to attendants, have shown. And we say this with knowledge of the facts, because for five months we were there with them and we got to see and understand more than they do to those fortunate enough to pass for those rooms for a few days.
why no names, because people would have to thank too many. But we want to bring to your attention their exemplary work, quite in contrast with many cases of so-called "medical malpractice" we hear all too often by the media. Also because I've never missed the discussion and debate with us parents, the basic elements to achieve a shared decision that makes the relationship more linear and helps to create those conditions of peace to which all stakeholders, and patients in the first place, have come to enjoy. Dialogue and confrontation that continues to this day to several months after discharge, the small, which have proved essential in the choice of specialist facilities to contact us to ensure to Richard the best care possible.
Besides the many choices, often delicate, which we had along the way have always been marked for a specific purpose, such as from the outset by the Director dettoci dell'UTIN Dr. Diego Gazzolo: return to parents not only a child in the best possible conditions, but a child can aspire to better quality of life fully. The effectiveness of the work done at your garrison from this group of people that we can never thank enough is revealed every time Richard smiles, makes a funny face or get angry because we are not fast enough to give him a spoonful of jelly later. To us, this little mom and dad wonder, the joy and the burden to prove to their height. Sincerely
