YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH .. . YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
risen Christ is the light that overcomes the darkness of sin and death: this is what we celebrate at Mass every Sunday.
Today's readings help us remain in this truth offering an invitation to live in the light of Isaiah. Concern to the Jewish people to rebuild the temple, God points out that true worship is that of love for the poor: this makes light of our existence.
This line is also salt and light Jesus calls his disciples. Note that Jesus does not say "you must be ..." but "you are." The verb tells a fact, says the new reality of the disciples. They are not only enlightened, but those involved in the mission of Jesus, are transmitters of light, are light.
The disciples can not be attributed to the light themselves, but they obscure, if not live by faith. That's why there is also a command: "... so shine." Be salt or light does not depend on them is a gift received by the master, but it's up to them to live according to this new reality: If you light need to shine. Even today we can not shirk this task be light for the world!
